Purpose
The Moving Truck Size Calculator provides a provider-neutral capacity planning range before a household selects a rental vehicle. It does not guarantee that belongings will fit and does not retrieve vehicle availability or specifications from rental companies.
Quick Estimate model
Quick Estimate combines a home-size baseline with box count, furniture amount, selected appliances, garage or storage contents, bikes and outdoor items, and bulky or specialty belongings. Home size supplies context, but it is not used as a direct truck-size lookup.
Detailed Inventory model
Detailed Inventory replaces generalized furniture and appliance allowances with bounded counts for common large items. A smaller home-size allowance remains for unlisted belongings such as lamps, side tables, decor, small furniture, and miscellaneous household contents. Moving boxes are entered separately.
Home-size baseline
Each home-size category has an internal approximate-volume baseline. In Quick Estimate, furniture amount adjusts that baseline. In Detailed Inventory, only part of the baseline is retained for unlisted contents to reduce double counting. These are editorial planning assumptions rather than industry averages.
Box-volume assumptions
The model applies one blended cubic-foot allowance per moving box. Actual volume varies because small, medium, large, wardrobe, specialty, and reusable containers have different external dimensions and may not stack with equal efficiency.
Furniture-volume assumptions
Quick mode uses minimal, average, or heavy furniture factors. Detailed mode uses internal approximate volumes for beds, mattresses, sofas, armchairs, dining furniture, dressers, desks, bookcases, coffee tables, and televisions. The model does not know actual dimensions or whether an item will be disassembled.
Appliance adjustments
Refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, and large ranges or ovens receive separate volume allowances. Quick mode uses selected appliance types; detailed mode uses item counts. Connections, preparation, weight, and handling requirements are outside the volume estimate.
Garage and storage adjustments
Quick mode adds a broad allowance for small, average, or large garage and storage contents. Detailed mode expects users to count relevant bicycles, outdoor furniture, and workshop equipment, while the unlisted-content allowance covers smaller miscellaneous items.
Specialty items
Pianos, safes, exercise equipment, outdoor furniture, workshop equipment, and oversized furniture add approximate volume in Quick Estimate. Heavy or unusually shaped items may require separate handling, equipment, access planning, or provider restrictions beyond cargo volume.
Capacity buffer
The calculator applies a 15% planning reserve above the high end of the estimated load range. This reserve accounts for irregular furniture shapes, void space, imperfect stacking, and inventory variation. It is not a guarantee that every loading arrangement will fit.
Truck category mapping
Required capacity is mapped to provider-neutral categories: cargo van, small moving truck, medium moving truck, large moving truck, and extra-large moving truck. Internal category limits organize the recommendation and are not specifications for a particular rental fleet. Users should compare the result with the verified cargo capacity of the exact vehicle offered.
Confidence calculation
Confidence describes input completeness. Quick Estimate normally produces medium confidence when all major household categories are supplied because individual furniture dimensions remain unknown. Detailed Inventory can produce high confidence when most item counts are explicitly provided. Missing fields, defaults, or sparse detailed input lower confidence.
Limitations
The model does not measure belongings, create a three-dimensional loading plan, assess weight distribution, or determine whether door openings and item dimensions are compatible. Disassembly, packing quality, protected surfaces, tie-down requirements, and loader experience can change usable space.
Provider differences
Vehicle body dimensions, wheel wells, door openings, payload, equipment, and stated capacity vary by provider and model. Category names on this site are intentionally generic and should not be treated as equivalent to a provider's named vehicle class.
Update policy
Calculation changes should remain deterministic, documented, and covered by tests. Assumptions may be revised when verified specifications, original inventory research, or stronger methodological sources are incorporated.
