Purpose of the calculator
The moving cost calculator provides an independent budgeting range before a household requests mover-specific estimates. It is not connected to a carrier or broker, does not retrieve live prices, and does not produce a binding quote.
Inputs used
The model uses move type, origin and destination ZIP codes, home size, bedroom count, approximate box count, stairs, elevator availability, packing service, specialty items, storage, and an optional moving date. Home size and boxes act as practical indicators of shipment volume, but a detailed inventory is more informative than either input alone.
Distance estimation
US ZIP codes are matched to geographic coordinates in a local lookup dataset. The calculator determines straight-line distance with the Haversine formula and applies a configurable indirect-route factor to produce approximate route mileage. This is not turn-by-turn road routing. Actual mileage can differ because of highways, water crossings, mountain routes, terminals, and the mover's operating plan.
Base calculation logic
Local-move planning emphasizes labor, household size, boxes, access, and a limited travel component. Long-distance planning gives route distance and estimated shipment size more influence. The calculator uses internal planning assumptions that are periodically reviewed against publicly available moving-cost information and observed market data. It does not claim that these assumptions represent a national average or a price offered by any mover.
Additional-service adjustments
Selected packing, stairs, specialty-item handling, and storage create separate planning components. An unselected service is not added. Individual movers may define, bundle, or calculate these services differently, and conditions such as long carries, parking permits, shuttles, waiting time, or elevator reservations may require separate treatment.
Estimate range
Each relevant component has a low and high planning allowance. The total range is the sum of those components. The “most likely” figure is a deterministic point near the middle of the same range; it is provided for budgeting convenience and is not a prediction of a final invoice.
Confidence score
Confidence describes input completeness, not price certainty. A high-confidence result has resolvable ZIP codes, household information, box count, and a moving date. Medium confidence means core route and household inputs are available but important detail remains incomplete. Low confidence means route or inventory information is missing, so broader assumptions are required.
Known limitations
The calculator does not inspect every item, determine shipment weight, query mover tariffs, confirm property access, select valuation coverage, or account for every regional and timing condition. ZIP-derived mileage is approximate. Use the result to prepare a budget and compare it with written estimates based on a consistent inventory.
Update policy
Methodology changes should be substantive, documented in the application, and tested before release. Assumptions may be revised as verified sources and original datasets become available. Page timestamps should change only when the methodology or explanatory content changes materially.
