Oregon Department of Transportation Sting

Able MoversIn a sting operation last Tuesday the staff from the Oregon Department of Transportation aided by Washington County Sheriffs Deputies invited five movers to a home in Hillsboro, OR. The operation was not entirely successful with two no shows; Portland Family Movers and Delivery Guys. Of the three that did turn up Josh Hunter left the scene before deputies finished their investigation, however not before they discovered his moving truck had farm license plates.

None were certified with the state and Budget Movers were found to be driving with a suspended license and no cargo insurance. The remaining company Able Movers are a serial offender this being their third violation operating without valid registration credentials. The video below was posted by the Better Business Bureau who were also part of the operation.

    What a load of BS. I happen to be apart of one of the companies in this area that is “certified”. ODOT is a flat out scam, especially the household goods department. They are misinforming the media for starters. It doesn’t just take a $300 application fee and a background check to be certified. There is a list of obligations that must be met before one can be “certified”

    In another article a ODOT representative stated that the $300 application fee goes towards a background check.. Hang on, I’m lost. This article is stating that they must personally submit a background check themselves, the company that is. However, why would they need to do that when the application fee goes towards that? Shady and misinforming.

    Apart from the application fee, you must have a background check on all OWNERS, not employees. ODOT, quit trying to make yourselves sound good to the media. Next, you are required to have a BIN number, which is for employee taxes and payroll. You should already have this if you are playing by the books of the IRS. Third, you must file for a USDOT number. This process takes up to a week. This insures that your truck is in proper working conditions, and you have the required equipment in your truck such as, flares, spare fuses, triangle cones, and a fire ext. Fourth, you will be required to join or submit a tariff “meeting” the ODOT regulations. What’s a tariff you ask? Simply put, its your rules/rates/and regulations. Moving companies have the option of crating one themselves (which ODOT highly suggests not to do), they can join an existing tariff from another company, or they can join one through OSMA (Oregon storage and moving association) this route costs about 200 per quarter. This is the option that ODOT pushes you to select because somehow their making money off of it.

    Now after you complete all of the above, you still have the chance of being denied. Ken Stewart is one of the operators of the household goods department down in Salem. You can drop him and email or two, maybe even a phone call. Odds are you probably wont hear back from him.

    ODOT makes these companies out to be bad guys. In truth their are very few individuals in the moving industry that are convicted felons. Jonathan was driving on a suspended license. Bad judgement call? No question, but this article makes him out to be some high class criminal that was about to steal your belongings.

    Why would they delay the process of an applicant? Who knows. ODOT gets 1% of your annual revenue every year. Needless to say, they are a hassle to deal with, even when you are on their good side.
