Hewelt Moving And Storage Impending Bankruptcy

Hewelt Moving and Storage of Royal Oak, MI have an “F” rating with the Better Business Bureau and recently featured on WDIV Detroit (video below). A Macomb Township couple Bill and Amanda Ziecina stored their belongings with Hewelt Moving and Storage four years ago, paying $200 a month. After reclaiming their belongings they discovered extensive water damage including irreplaceable items such as family photographs ruined by mold. Unknown to them two years previously a sprinkler had malfunctioned and deluged their belongings with water. They were not informed at the time and the company continued to debit the Ziecina’s bank account.

It transpires that Jim Hewelt the owner of Hewelt Moving and Storage is planning to file for bankruptcy and there are questions over the company’s insurance coverage. It seems unlikely that the Ziecina’s will be compensated for their loss but there are two important lessons to be learnt here.

Firstly make sure your homeowners or renters’ policy covers your belongings stored off-premises. Secondly if you really must store irreplaceable personal items then find a separate secure storage facility with fire and intrusion alarms that are monitored 24/7.
