Ten Movers Fined By Washington UTC

Yesterday Washington state regulators fined ten residential moving companies (the commission does not regulate interstate moving companies) for operating illegally without permits. An administrative law judge at the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) gave five of the companies a $5,000 penalty, $4,500 of which was suspended for two years on the condition that the companies comply with the commission order. Two companies received a $5,000 penalty, $4,000 of which was suspended for two years on the same condition. One company received a $2,500 penalty with $1,500 suspended for two years on the condition that the company complies with the commission order.

One company received a $5,000 penalty which was suspended entirely based on the owner’s testimony and proof that he has left the industry. and another company failed to appear and was fined the full $5,000 by default. Details in the following table:

The UTC is the state’s watchdog agency in charge of enforcing consumer protection and safety regulations for more than 200 residential moving companies operating within the state. Movers must charge appropriate rates, carry proper insurance and keep their vehicles safely maintained.
