Moving Fraud – Protect Your Move

If you are looking for a moving company for your interstate move the new video (bottom of post) from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) should be compulsory viewing. Released as part of their current campaign Moving Fraud – Protect Your Move it is a salutary reminder of what can happen if you choose the wrong company.

Statistics released by the FMCSA show that hostage situations (a mover refuses delivery unless you pay a ransom) are a common complaint (chart below).

Hostage complaints compared 2013 and 2014

The FMCSA say that the average claim in a hostage load situation or other cases of fraud is $25,000 and the average claim from all complaints is around $10,000.

The top cities for complaints, not necessarily in the order of severity are:

  • New York (specifically Brooklyn) including the northern half of New Jersey
  • Los Angeles Metro Area – all of LA County spilling over into Orange and Ventura Counties
  • San Jose, CA including all of Santa Clara County
  • Miami Metropolitan Area including all of Dade and Broward Counties
  • Las Vegas Metro Area including all of Clark County
  • Houston and Dallas Metropolitan Areas

The top five complaint volumes by State are shown in the chart below.
