Moving Company’s $21.2 million Court Penalty

Moving company brokers sell your business to a moving company for a fee and have no responsibility in law for how your move works out. You should never use a broker and here is an example of why. Look at the screenshot below (taken today) from movers.com (a well known broker) showing Progressive Movers of Paterson, New Jersey. You can see that Progressive Movers are “100% Recommended” by movers.com and have 5 out of 5 stars for Accuracy of Estimate, Moving Services, Packing Services and Professionalism.

Recently a Passaic County Superior Court judge ordered Progressive Movers of Paterson, New Jersey and a related company to pay $21.2 million in civil penalties and customer restitution for many hundreds of violations of consumer protection laws. According to the Attorney General the companies enticed consumers with low-cost moves that they had no intention of honoring. Bait-and-switch pricing, demands for higher payments and forcing consumers to pay significantly higher prices by withholding their possessions were all part of their ordinary business practices.

Resist the temptation to use a broker and follow the advice in Finding A Moving Company In Easy Steps (Part 1).
