As reported previously low bridge strikes by moving company trucks are not uncommon. For example; Anderson Cottonwood canal bridge, Anderson CA, East Street railroad bridge, Westwood MA and Saugatuck Avenue railroad bridge, Westport CT. More often than not these are the result of drivers being led onto roads they should not be on by the GPS devices they are using.
No such excuse for the driver of the Student Services Moving and Storage Company truck that hit the 14th Street bridge in Charlottesville as the company is based only two miles from the bridge. Not only that, the bridge has been fitted with a height sensor and alarm. Fortunately no one was hurt and the truck was empty (images below).
The operations manager for the Buckingham Branch Railroad, which leases the tracks from CSX and Norfolk Southern, said that truck crashes under the 14th Street bridge occur regularly every few months.
